 “Great indoor lens!” 2010-02-01
By André Hughes (Montreal, Canada)
Very good lens, fast, track shrap and lightweight. More suited than a 50mm 1.8 for indoor photography with a cropped sensor. Highly recommanded.

“A great all around lens, especially indoors” 2010-02-01
By rice lover (California)
New to digital SLR photography, I purchased this 35mm f/1.8G as a 2nd lens for my D90, purchased 6 weeks ago. It’s an ideal complement to my other 2 lens, the medium telephoto zoom 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II Nikkor and the ultra wide 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G Nikkor lens. While it performs well as a general purpose lens, it really excels indoors during flashless photography. The first time I used it indoors without a flash, I could not believe how well lit my subject appeared and how sharp the image was. Where did all that light come from? My other 2 lens which each cost 4 times more could not compete in that regard. When deciding between the 50mm and the 35mm, I liked the fact that I could frame a person sitting at the same table with my 35mm without getting up from my seat and moving backward as I would have to do with a 50mm. It’s perhaps a small point, but it suits my purposes better.

This lens has exceeded my expectations–it’s definitely worth the $200 I paid for it. I think a prime lens like this (or the 50mm) has a place in every SLR photographer’s camera bag.

 “Great optics, build quality” 2010-01-30
By X. LIM
This review is written from my perspective as a first-time owner of a prime lens:

I’ve been really happy with the Nikon 35mm f1.8. While been using an 18-200mm all this while and have gotten great pictures with it, I wanted something that I could use in low light situations, as well as take portraits and food pictures with beautiful bokeh (blurred background). The 35mm f1.8 does the job well. Simply by tweaking the aperture (and leaving the other settings in program mode), the 35mm f1.8 gives nice bokeh while maintaining sharpness of the subject, be it a gourmet dish or a person. I’ve found that I’ve gotten my best pictures not necessarily at f1.8, but at f2.8 or even f3.2 - definitely play around with it till you get what you like!

Also, having the focal length fixed is also somewhat liberating - it forces you to think more carefully about how to frame a scene, rather than being lazy and relying on your zoom to do the job.

I’m pretty happy with the build quality - doesn’t seem fragile at all to me. I routinely stuff my camera into my backpack, with no extra padding, and it’s been perfectly happy. The lens comes in a complex matrix of cardboard that cushions it from any external impact, and so was shipped in perfect condition and arrived on time.

I decided on the 35mm after testing out the 50mm f1.8. The 50mm brings things much closer to you on DX cameras (non-full frame), and as a result I often had to lean a lot further back just to get the subject in frame. I find the focal distance of 35mm just right on DX cameras.

In short, if you’re like me and want to take nice food pictures and portraits of people with sharp subjects and blurred backgrounds, I highly recommend this lens!

“Nice fast lens, good addition to D60″ 2010-01-28
By T. Alex (Seattle, WA)
Bought this lens from Adorama (it was backordered on Amazon at the time) to use with my D60. This is a really nice fast lens and makes for nice photos in indoor/reduced light situations, which is where I am usually clicking, mostly pictures of the kids, or casual photos of friends and family. The size and weight of this lens is also a great fit with the D60, they seem to go together very well. Portraits are the kind which come out much better than the kit lens (18-55 VR lens) I have. Nothing much to speak of as far as negatives. Did not give 5 stars because - well, 5 stars would mean there’s nothing better, and I don’t know enough about lenses to say that.

“Clearer images in shaded areas and at night” 2010-01-27

I got this lens for my visit to Vegas. I used this lens for pictures at night and at Hoover dam and the pictures came out great. I’m happy with the results from this Nikon lens.
